Maciej Nikodem

Dr Maciej Nikodem graduated Computer Engineering (2003) and Control and Automation (2005) from Faculty of Electronics, Wroclaw University of Technology. From 2003 to 2008 he was a Ph.D. student working on fault analysis attacks on constrained devices (e.g. smart cards). In his Ph.D. thesis he proposed modifications to AES encryption algorithm and ElGamal signature scheme that reduces the risk of successful fault analysis attack. His dissertation was distinguished by the Council of Faculty of Electronics. Since 2008 he works at the Faculty of Electronics, currently he is an assistant professor in Computer Architecture Group. His research interests focus on embedded systems and low-power wireless technologies (sensor networks, IoT, indoor localisation and tracking). He leads courses on cryptography and databases as well as bachelor and master projects. His aim is to increase cooperation with industry and industry involvement in teaching process at the university. Since 2013 he is a head of steering commitee that organises a STEAM (Students TEAM) projects - joint semester-long industrial projects and conference during which during which students present their achievements to their peers, university staff and industry representatives.

In 2005 he graduated a 1-year long postgraduate studies “Public key infrastructure and digital signatures” led by the best polish experts in security and cryptography at the Faculty of Fundamental Problems of Technology, Wroclaw University of Technology. In 2009, as an expert in cryptography and smart card security, he was a member of a group of specialists that created an analysis on smart cards for nationwide e-ID system. The analysis was done for the Ministry of the Interior as a part of the preparation process to the implementation of e-ID system in Poland.

For 5 years he cooperated with StartUp and Surfland Deweloper System companies in development and implementation of software for real-estate market. He started as software developer (software he developed was licensed to over 60 companies) and ended as a head of IT group. Between January 2011 and August 2012 he was a research specialist in Nokia Siemens Network. He developed a HW/SW co-simulation solution for speeding up evaluation of baseband radio processing blocks. He integrated a MATLAB simulations with FPGA-implemented dedicated hardware for signal processing. In 2012, as an awardee of TOP 500 Innovators program, he took a 2 month course on commercialisation, entrepreneurship, IP rights and strategy execution at Stanford University, CA, USA. Within this program he took a 3 week visit to Wireless Business Unit in CISCO Systems taking part in development of localisation-based services and software for WiFi networks.

Between 2013 and 2014 he cooperated with MT-Silesia Sp. z o.ol company in developement of accurate underground positioning system based on state-of-the art low-power wireless communication technologies (IEEE 802.15.4) for asset localisation, tracking and mining safety systems. Together with engineers from MT-Silesia they developed a working prototype tag and anchor device that used UWB and ToF measurement for localization. Between 2015 and 2018 he cooperated with Thaumatec Sp. z  o.o. deploying city-wide LoRa radio network, investigating possibilities of GPS-free localization and geofencing in LoRa, and supervising LoRa-related projects. From 2017 to 2018 he was supervising a team of 4 people designing and developing a BLE-based sensor end-device, related infrastructure and communication protocols for monitoring welfare of milk cows. The large scale validation is runing with 500 animals and 30 infrastructure devices deployed in 6 cowsheeds. Since 2018 he cooperates with Neurosoft Sp. z o.o. deploying city-wide LPWAN radio network using LoRaWAN technology. He also investigates possibilities of GPS-free localization in LoRaWAN network.
